Back pain
Back pain can arise from the discs, joints, nerves, vertebrae, muscles, and other structures of the lumbar spine. Identifying the source is important before selecting treatment.
What may be causing your back pain?
- Lumbar disc herniation or degeneration
- Lumbar facet joint pain and arthritis
- Lumbar radiculopathy and sciatica (a pinched nerve)
- Lumbar spinal stenosis
- Vertebrogenic low back pain
- Discogenic low back pain
- Sacroiliac joint pain and dysfunction
- Muscle and myofascial pain
- Vertebral compression fractures
The diagnosis picks the treatment
Nothing is treated until the source is confirmed. Treatment then comes from one or more of these categories. Which one, and whether any procedure is needed at all, is decided with you after the evaluation.
- Interventional Spine
Reaches the exact structure causing the pain. Image-guided injections and nerve procedures for a disc, a facet joint, the SI joint, or an irritated nerve.
- Minimally Invasive Spine
Advanced treatment without major surgery. Small incisions or percutaneous access and image guidance treat specific sources of spine-related pain, typically on an outpatient basis with most patients home the same day. An option when conservative care is no longer enough but major spine surgery may not be necessary.
- Neuromodulation
Modifies pain signaling within the nervous system. Advanced therapies such as spinal cord stimulation can provide meaningful relief for appropriately selected patients. Treatment typically begins with a temporary trial, so you and your physician evaluate the response before considering permanent implantation.
