Nerve pain can feel like burning, tingling, electric shocks, numbness, or hypersensitivity. It can result from injury or irritation of a peripheral nerve, disease affecting multiple nerves, vascular disease, or a problem involving nerves as they leave the spine. Identifying the source and the type of nerve pain guides the treatment.
What may be causing your nerve pain?
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
- Postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles)
- Persistent nerve pain after surgery or injury
- Peripheral nerve injury or entrapment
- Cervical or lumbar radiculopathy (a pinched nerve)
The diagnosis picks the treatment
Nothing is treated until the source is confirmed. Treatment then comes from one or more of these categories. Which one, and whether any procedure is needed at all, is decided with you after the evaluation.
- Neuromodulation
Modifies pain signaling within the nervous system. Advanced therapies such as spinal cord stimulation can provide meaningful relief for appropriately selected patients. Treatment typically begins with a temporary trial, so you and your physician evaluate the response before considering permanent implantation.
- Interventional Spine
Reaches the exact structure causing the pain. Image-guided injections and nerve procedures for a disc, a facet joint, the SI joint, or an irritated nerve.
